A day after the Udhampur attack, Border Security Force (BSF) DG D.K. Pathak said had it not been for the 'courage and valour' shown by constables Rocky and Subhendu Rai, the scale of damage would have been much greater.Rocky, who fell to the bullets of one of the two Lashkar- e-Taiba (LeT) militants, was the only one armed in the BSF bus that was targeted. There were 42 other personnel on board. Constable Subhendu Rai also died fighting LeT militant Noman alias Nomi.
This was the first time in two decades that NH1A, the main highway that connects Jammu to Srinagar, has been targeted, Mr. Pathak said. "It was considered to be a safe territory till now, our convoys were moving in the area as part of routine duty. There is no fixed pattern on movement of convoy, we keep changing it," he noted. On reports that Noman was killed by a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan, he said, "There is absolutely no doubt who killed the terrorist.”
